Welcome to Nidd Films – Telling Untold Stories Through Film

Hello and welcome to Nidd Films!

This is the beginning of an exciting new chapter for me as a writer and producer. After over 30 years in drama, theatre, and media education, and years working in TV and film in supporting roles, I’m returning to filmmaking with a renewed focus and passion. Nidd Films will be my home for historical drama projects that connect deeply with Yorkshire’s heritage, community, and stories that deserve to be heard.

Our first project, Sweetheart, is a 26‑minute period short film inspired by the true story of Mary‑Jane Skaife, my own ancestor, who was tragically murdered by her lover James Atkinson in 1858. The case caused national outrage at the time, with James acquitted on grounds of insanity and sent to Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum, where he spent 50 years until his death.

This film is my way of giving Mary‑Jane a voice that history denied her, blending stark period realism with ghostly folkloric imagery. It’s a story of love, obsession, betrayal, and injustice – and it still resonates today in conversations about coercive control and gender inequality.

Over the coming months, this blog will share our journey:

Research and development insights into Mary‑Jane’s world.

Behind‑the‑scenes updates as we develop the script, locations, and production plans.

Photos, videos, and teasers as the film takes shape.

Opportunities for local involvement – as extras, crew, or supporters - please get in touch.

We’re aiming high with a budget of around £40,000 we’re planning a spring 2027 shoot and 2028 festival submissions to bring Mary‑Jane’s story to audiences around the world.

If you love history, heritage, and independent filmmaking, follow our journey here at Nidd Films, and help us bring Mary‑Jane Skaife’s voice back to life.
