Vanishing Fairies.
Vanishing Fairies.

The Vanishing Fairies Poster Competition

In 1846, William Darnbrough, sexton of St Jude’s Chapel in Nidderdale, shared a memory that has since enchanted generations. He told how Hartwith Moor was once “alive with fairies, dancing on moonlit nights.” Yet by the end of his life, he said, “they had all but vanished” - a truth he carried with regret.

This autumn, as a new term begins, we want to bring a little sparkle back. ✨

Our film production team at Nidd Films is inviting you to take part in the Vanishing Fairies Poster Competition, a chance to reimagine those lost fairies and breathe life into their story once again.

But this isn’t only about folklore.

Our upcoming film Sweetheart: Angel of the Moor is rooted in Nidderdale’s history, telling the tragic story of Mary-Jane Skaife in 1858. Her story raises difficult questions about justice, women’s voices, and how society decides which stories are remembered and which are silenced.

By creating your own fairy poster, you’ll be joining that conversation. Through art, creativity, and imagination, you’ll help us explore how old tales still matter today, and how voices, both magical and human, can be kept alive.

What We’re Hoping to Achieve

  • Reconnect people with Yorkshire folklore and landscape.

  • Encourage young people to express themselves creatively.

  • Use imagination to keep hidden voices and histories alive.

How to Enter

  1. Create your poster - digital, painted, illustrated, or mixed media.

  2. Share it on Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag: #VanishingFairiesPoster and tag @NiddFilms.

Entries close on January 12th 2026.

  • Winning poster featured in our official campaign materials (with credit).

  • VIP invitation to the first screening of Sweetheart: Angel of the Moor.
