Darley Memorial Hall, Saturday 28 November, 6pm to 8pm

On Saturday 28 November we’re opening the doors of Darley Memorial Hall for an evening of film, local history and conversation, and we’d love you to join us.

The evening is a chance for us to share what Nidd Films is about: telling the stories of Nidderdale, rooted in its landscape, its people and its past. We’ll be screening our short film The Valley: A Keeping, filmed in Darley itself, in the house where Mary-Jane Skaife once lived.

The Valley: A Keeping is a poetic short film exploring landscape, memory and human presence in Nidderdale, North Yorkshire. It grew from a practice-led film and research project. The valley is a lived place, shaped by time, weather, work and the lives of generations. Through performance, voice and quiet observation, the film invites us to consider how those lives remain connected to our own.

Developed alongside Sweetheart: Angel of the Moor, the film gathers images, places and remembered voices that surround that story. It also introduces themes running throughout the Nidd Films slate: our relationship with nature, the passage of time and the things people leave behind.

We'll also talk about the stories still waiting to be told, among them the true story of Mary-Jane Skaife, the 21-year-old murdered on Stumps Lane in 1858, whose story inspired Sweetheart.

Above all, this is the start of something we hope will grow: a community that helps keep local stories alive. Already, local historians, family researchers, artists and people whose families have lived here for generations have been getting in touch, and each conversation adds something to the picture. If you have a story, a memory, a photograph, or simply an interest in the history of the valley, we’d love to meet you.
