Nidd Films: Vanishing Fairies Poster Competition -  Deadline January 12th 2026.

In 1846, William Darnbrough, sexton of St Jude’s Chapel in Nidderdale, once told how Hartwith Moor was “alive with fairies, dancing on moonlit nights.” By the end of his life, he said, “they had all but vanished” - which was a matter of great regret to him.

To help create a bit of sparkle to the start of your new term our film production team are inviting you to bring those fairies back to life, not only as a celebration of folklore but as part of a much bigger story.

Our film Sweetheart: Angel of the Moor is rooted in local history, exploring the life and tragic death of Mary-Jane Skaife in 1858. Her story asks difficult questions about justice, women’s voices, and how society chooses which stories to preserve and which to silence.

Through this competition, we hope to:

  • Reconnect people with Yorkshire folklore and landscape.

  • Encourage young people to express themselves through creativity.

  • Use imagination as a way of keeping hidden voices and histories alive.

By designing your vision of the vanishing fairies, you’ll not only take part in a piece of creative heritage but also become part of the wider conversation around impact, memory, and storytelling.
