Sweetheart
Angel of the Moor
Sweetheart: Angel of the Moor A short historical drama rooted in Yorkshire’s landscape and memory. Sweetheart: Angel of the Moor is a short historical drama in development from Nidd Films, inspired by the true story of Mary-Jane Skaife, whose death in 1858 remains part of Nidderdale’s social and cultural history. Set and filmed entirely on location in North Yorkshire, the project is grounded in place, heritage research, and historical authenticity. The film explores themes of memory, justice, and community through a contemporary lens, with a particular focus on women’s lived experience within 19th-century rural England. Production is planned for September 2027, allowing for extended development, community engagement, and careful visual research. ⸻ Grounded Research & Development Early development work has included location research and stills photography at sites directly connected to Mary-Jane Skaife’s life. In August 2025, stills photographer Angus Chau captured development images at Mary-Jane’s former home, with thanks to Paul Boughton for his generous access. These materials form part of an ongoing research-led approach to visual storytelling. ⸻ Creative Vision Written and produced by Mark Anthony (Nidd Films), the project is conceived as both a cinematic work and a platform for wider engagement. Sweetheart: Angel of the Moor aims to balance historical rigour with emotional clarity, combining heritage cinema with socially engaged storytelling. A female director will be attached as development progresses. ⸻ Delivery & Exhibition The film is intended for exhibition across festivals, heritage venues, and digital platforms, with accompanying outreach activity designed to support discussion around history, gender, and place.
